The middle guy is 12..

This boy turned 12 yesterday, our middle guy.

Its our little tradition to talk about their birth stories on their birthday, and this one was something quite magically surreal.  I'm sure all the angels were smiling down upon us this night, because his birth was something of a dream.

He was ten days overdue and I'd been to visit my wonderfully wise Nan, mum to eleven, the day before labour started. I mentioned that I may have had a little show a couple of days ago but I wasn't too sure.  In her loving but very stern way, she told me I should be seeing my doctor about that and you don't just leave those things go.

While playing the waiting game, we took ourselves and our big 2yr old boy off to see his first movie. We had a relaxing late afternoon drive through the mountains and came home to fish 'n chips and Saturday night footy. Sitting there on the couch, I told Nick what Nan had said. He suggested that perhaps I should just go and get checked out, for peace of mind. So I did.

I jumped in the car, took myself into the Royal Women's and waited a few hours to be checked over. They were quite happy that everything was as it should be and reassured me that the baby will come whenever it's ready.  So at 11:30 at night, back into the car I hoped and took myself home.

I was quietly creeping into bed beside Nick at midnight, he asked how I was and I said fine.  Right then we both heard 'POP', seriously heard it!  I'm not even sure what that pop was, but at that very moment my water broke!  Nick jumped on the phone to Mum, who must have been camped around the corner because it seemed like 5 minutes flat and she was knocking on our front door, while I scurried to the bathroom laughing and mopping up puddles as I went.

We arrived back at the hospital to find there was only one other woman admitted who had just given birth earlier that evening.  The reception desk had three delightful midwives sitting, drinking tea, knitting and welcoming us to the suite. They made us comfortable and sat to chat with us for a bit. Contractions were mild and not very close. In other birthing experiences with both the big and the littles guy, we've always been sent home, but considering we were the only ones there on this night, we were told to make ourselves at home and just holler if we needed anything.

We couldn't believe how calm and relaxed everything was, after quite a manic and rather scary first time round experience, it felt like the world had come to a halt for this very special moment in time. Nick chatted with all the lovely ladies, just waiting on this baby.  My contractions began to speed up a little and I could feel my body getting ready.  I took the opportunity to go to the loo just to cleanse, you know, and as I walked past the happy little group of smiling women, one called out "Are you sure you need to go, this is what the baby's head feels like and I don't want it to be born into the toilet!" I did wonder this, but I knew that as soon as I had cleared my bowels I'd be able to surrender to the birth.

I remember walking past the desk on my way back to our room, watching all the smiles and knitting and cups of tea, and thinking how blessed to have all of these people just sitting here, just waiting for me and this baby.  I was told to get some sleep now, it'll be a while yet and I will need all the rest I could get.  But just as I climbed up onto my bed, labour took hold.  The contractions quickly became more and more intense.  I looked at Nick and told him this was it.  He ran to the door and called to the midwives who casually popped in to check me over and reassure us it will be some time yet. But this baby was coming soon and I knew it.

I grabbed hold of Nick's hand tightly, he buzzed the desk, and the next few minutes are a bit of a blur. I do remember that just as I thought I couldn't bare the pain a moment longer, there was all the encouragement from this incredible team of women and my beautiful strong husband to push just one more time.  From somewhere deep within came the strength, that primal force to push, so hard, and that was it.

At 4am, our little Jimmy was born. Within seconds a doctor appeared to examine us both (I remember it being a crazy long wait the first time) and everyone was all a buzz about how wonderful this was, and what a beautiful birth it was to be a witness to.

By the time I'd showered and we were snuggled up in bed together, the real world had started again. More women in labour checking in and midwives moving hastily about.  Not a cup of tea or a pair of knitting needles in sight.

the sunset series..

Our beautiful middle guy turned eleven yesterday.

E L E V E N !

It was a very big, and very happy day, of going to the movies in town with some friends, timezone fun, dodgeball in the backyard, cake and, in keeping with tradition...a sunset walk.

It was sooo cold, we could see our breath in the still, icy air.

We wandered, marvelled at a lone surfer braving the arctic water, and we watched the enormous waves crash in with such effortless force.

There was some shell collecting and dune climbing.

There was a dash to rescue the baby girl from being dumped by an unexpected wave, and there was the filling of sea water into my boots because I was not quite quick enough to save us both!

The colours were beautifully pastel and serene before the darkness swiftly moved in.

We went home with cold faces and pink cheeks to warm showers, and birthday fish 'n chips, and we curled up on the couch for movie night.

All a little bit perfect really.

Happy Birthday darling James! We're so glad you had the best day x

my creative space..back to basics in the kitchen

My creative space this last week has been a whole lot of trial and (mostly) error in the kitchen...

Our middle guy has finally had his official allergy testing and let me just say 'overwhelmed' is a massive understatement for this mama and papa!

It seems he has several intolerance's, however, the majority of us do, we just don't know about it.  By the end of his appointment we were convinced the 'air' diet might be our only option!

However, after lots of discussion and minor freakouts we were able to break it down.  The majority of his intolerance's are fairly minor, not ideal but not necessarily the cause of his problems.  The key things we need to avoid are wheat, yeast and dairy.  In order to break down the yeast build up in his system which is really the core of his ailments, we also need to eliminate sugar as this is what feeds the yeast, therefore making it very difficult for his body to digest any other nutrients.

In the scheme of things, this was much easier for us to process and work with, though let me tell you I have been completely blown away by the fact that EVERYTHING we purchase has either yeast or sugar no matter how healthy it's supposed to be.

This has been a week of stripping back to raw basics.  Our kids don't usually get to have a whole lot of sugary treats anyway, or so we thought.  Lunch box treats are home made, the odd fizzy on a special occasion, an ice-cream or lolly at the weekend. So, although these things weren't readily available to them everyday it has been quiet a challenge to eliminate them completely.

For the next 6-8 weeks we are doing everything from scratch, including making our own stock as there is nothing I can find in stores that doesn't contain yeast extract.  So far, we've created some very ugly and not very tasty disasters, but we're getting better, and today I made cake and some pretty good looking muffins which have been a bit of a hit, YAY!

It's certainly a great relief to know just what have been the causes of these tummy troubles.  The best part is, and I praise him everyday for his incredible attitude, our middle guy is taking this all in his stride and being very matter of fact about it.  Bless his little heart!

eight...

eight years ago this beautiful soul came bouncing into our world.  A bundle of joy, absolutely!

Eight years ago today this little man was born, all cruisey and knowing.  He timed it perfectly, we were the only people in the labor ward, can you believe that!? We had four midwives sitting at the reception desk, chatting, drinking tea, knitting, popping in every now and then to see how mama was doing and offering dad a cuppa.  A doctor at the ready, wandering with time on his hands.  Honestly, it was the most surreal night, like everything had come to a stand still, just to be ready and waiting to welcome this little person into the world.

Sure the memory of the excruciating pain that is giving birth is all a little bit faded now, but this was the calmest birth I've had, all the stars were aligned and I lived every moment, feeling completely in control and ready, ready when he was.  The midwives were settling in for the night waiting for it all to crank up a notch, saying we've a while to go yet and suggesting I get some sleep in preparation for a long evening ahead.  But no.  The intensity all ramped up very quickly and within 4hours of labor starting at home, he was born.  He breezed into this world just as he breezes through life.
I know he'll be like this always.  He doesn't stress too much about things, he goes with the flow.  He is incredibly sensitive and loves so very deeply.  He is wacky funny and so on the ball.  His days are full of adventure, imagination and fun, forever fun!

You are beautiful beyond words my darling little dark haired boy.  You amaze me everyday and I love you with all that I am.

autumn dreaming...

I know we are only half way through summer here in Australia, but I can not stop crocheting for cooler weather! And all my boys, including the Mr, have put in their orders already..
and one for me..
Also, I love this idea from Kelly Doust's The Crafty Kid, a brilliant & quick as a wink way to recyle those old wooly jumpers!

at my house...

...a mad start to the week after being away for the weekend.  So this morning, hubby was off to catch the train to Melbourne at 5.30am & as the cupboards were bare & inspiration was lacking in the food department, the boys and I headed off to an impromptu breaky at the Dunes before school...
they couldn't believe their luck, & I was just happy for coffee & the peaceful view.

at my house...

A superhero turns 6!!

Toy Story 3 - finally! We've been waiting ever so patiently to see this movie, but the 6yr old wanted to see it on his birthday...
and cake...
a nice way to end the school holidays.

While searching for the (dreaded) Buzz Lightyear quilt, I also found my favourite winter quilt cover hidden in the depths of our linen cupboard.  I love this quilt, I'd almost forgotten we had it.
can't wait to snuggle down in there tonight...

We've been so slow moving over the last 2 weeks, bliss, how are we ever going to get out the door on time tomorrow?

Uh,oh....

When my little Preppie came in this morning, cool as a cucumber, and sat up for breakfast dressed like this...

we had to laugh, even the collar is turned up!
'Fancy huh!?' he says to us.
If this is how he likes to modify the school uniform in Prep, I'm a little concerned for the years ahead...

First Day Excitement!

My little dark haired boys' first day of school today, and he was busting to get there and get started!  No tears, just 'filled to the brim' excited.  All went smoothly, a little too smoothly for me.  I felt a bit guilty that I hadn't shed a tear, but I think I am just so happy for him & he is so ready to move on to this stage of his little life.  He has grown up very quickly, I don't know where all those gorgeous, happy bouncing baby years have gone but I'm pretty sure I've made the most of our precious time and I do believe he is well prepared and ready to take on the world of primary school.
Of course, he seriously underestimated the enormity of the day, so when he came home he was exhausted, emotional, short tempered & very disappointed that there wasn't quite as much play time as he had expected.  "We only got to do a few things and then we had to sit on the mat and learn!".  Oh-oh, let's hope we're more impressed tomorrow...

Mum's Night

We had Mothers Night at kinder yesterday, it was really nice to spend time with my little dark haired boy! We played Star Wars (I was Princess Leia, he was Han Solo) we raced, we danced, he gave me a massage, I read him a story, he made me a bracelet and he did my makeup - yes, makeup! I looked like a 'lady of the night' by the time he'd finished! Then he did my nails and served me a plate of nibbles.  Great fun was had by all....the challenge is keeping this polish on as long as I can so as not to offend.  My youngest is a great fan of nail polish - loves it!  As I woke, the immediate shock of the red polish made me think for a brief second I was bleeding to death!  Then my little guy said "ooohhh, Mummy your polish is beautiful! Can jimmy do mine too?!"
